Over the last few years I’ve realized that God sure has given us loads of natural tools for our health, both our physical and emotional well being. Here I’ll share tips I’ve learned along my journey, as well as invite a few special friends to divulge their secrets from their natural medicine cabinets!

A Minute with God

Have you ever tried to spend one still minute with God? Not praying or talking but simply silent and still with Him. I tried this morning. Alone in my hotel room, it should have been easy. But it wasn’t. It was unsettlingly hard. All of the thoughts I wanted to share with Him. I was that kid. The one on pins and needles, ready to explode three seconds into 1-2-3 Quiet & Still. I’m pretty sure I didn’t last much longer than that before attempting to start over again in my stillness with God. And again. But that’s the amazing thing about God. His Grace starts over again and again. And again. Over the last few weeks, I feel like God has gently been nudging me to “Rest.” I’m not sure why there is so much guilt associated with resting. Embarassingly, I’ve been one to judge and envy stay-at-home mama friends or someday parent friends who take these things called “siestas” or “naps” while their toddlers slumber or just because they’re tired. Wth?? And it makes …

Quinoa Power Balls (Grain Free, Vegan)

How’s Spring Break everyone?! Ours has been oh-so lovely. We haven’t done anything spectacular (yet!) but have simply had a really beautiful time doing a lot of nothing together. This week we’ve been snacking on these super easy Quinoa Power Balls (quinoa is pronounced keen•wah; it took me forever and a half to figure that one out). I love any and all protein balls. They’re packed with such goodness and provide an incredible pick me up throughout the day! Plus, you can’t beat all of the amazing flavors and combinations you can make with them. I’ve made these little nuggets of goodness with oats, without oats, raw, cooked, smashed them into bars, etc etc. Our current fav is grain free (quinoa is technically a seed, not a grain!) and pumps us full of omega 3s from the chia and flax. They’re moist and delicious and we think you might just fall in love! Quinoa Power Balls ingredients 2 cups of cooked quinoa 1/2 cup of nut butter (peanut, almond, sunflower) 1/4 cup of sweetener of …

A Present of Presence + a Simple DIY for Valentines

How’s everyone feeling? Lovelier? Lighter? Crazy and tired? Yep, me, too. Wrapping up our (almost) two weeks of love spreading, I subconsciously focused the first week on friends and strangers. This week I realized there were a few people who could use some extra impromptu love right under my roof! I started thinking about what kind of Valentine surprises and treats I would make for the kiddos and Joe when God hit me with a big – Your presence is the best gift they could receive. Wow. Ok. Got it. After that very loud whisper I began consciously leaving my phone and laptop in our bedroom or in my purse. If it’s not out, I’m not perusing mindless activity that has nothing to do with the current moment I’m sitting in or who I’m with. And guess what? It worked! I’ve had a really lovely week with my children and my husband. Nothing mind blowing. No fireworks. We kept our quota of crazy, hair bending moments, too. But there were loads of extra hugs and laughs …

Kale + Kate

Today I thought I’d share one of my favorite recipes using the Queen of Greens – Kale! It’s a wonderful winter green that provides SO many delicious nutrients when eaten (fiber, folate and Vitamins A, C and K to name a few). This amazing green has become one of my favorite edibles that God has so generously gifted us. It’s such a hearty green it’s even proven itself against light ice and snow in our garden! Kale and I met several years ago. I had begun working with a fabulous Health Coach and beautiful friend, Kate Lindsay, to help guide me through the beginning of our journey as a family with Food Allergies. We had just discovered that Noah, our oldest, was allergic to gluten, dairy, soy, peanuts and sugar and I was a complete novice in the kitchen. At the time, the microwave and eating out were just a way of life for our family. I went to a cooking class hosted by Kate and I learned the in’s and out’s of Kale and never looked back! One of the oddest …

Strength

Well, it’s been awhile since my yoga mat and I have had a date. Like, maybe, creeping on 3 months awhile. I think we had a 30 minute power lunch next to my bed one day in December. But it was a long December, a blur to be honest, and that could very well be a false statement. I looked at my schedule for this week and decided Hump Day would be my January 1st. Twenty seven days late really isn’t so bad if you’re a Kerby…or a Ferguson…or most anyone related to me. I felt like we were on a first date. I was a little shy and feeling a bit self conscious to say the least. I decided at the last minute, since I was being so awkward with myself and my mat, that I would push the awkwardness a bit farther and try a new studio. Just jump ship. Have you ever done that? Yep, me either. I walked into the trendy yoga studio with EDM blaring in the back ground thinking, “Oh boy. This is …

Nature’s Prozac Part I

Depending where you’re planted right now, the great outdoors might not feel like an oasis. Buuuuuuuttt, please hear me out. I was in quite a dumpy mood for a few days while the weather was cooling down. I spent my time bundled up nice and tight inside, trying to keep warm with hot tea and extra hugs from the kiddos. My favorite winter activities involve blankets, snuggling and movies. But as the temperatures were dropping I noticed my temp(er) rising. Finally, in a tizzy, I bundled the kids up and decided we would overhaul our raggedy garden and get those spring bulbs in. No more than five minutes had passed and my Spirit was lifted! I heard laughter all around me. And wait, what was that noise coming from me? Alas. It was laughter as well. Maybe it was the brisk, cold air. Maybe it was getting my hands in the dirt. Possibly, it was the hunch I had as I planted 100 bulbs around my home, that in a few short months there would be a bounty of …

5 Natural Immune Boosters

Half of my family has already been sick with the flu. Why are we getting the flu when we’re so healthy? Well, the kiddos bring it home and they’re tiny little systems are still building up tolerances. Joe also tends to pick up more than normal because a. He’s male and b. He was a preemie, so his system is a bit compromised. With that said, he’s made tons of stride in strengthening his system via food choices, movement, stress management and self love. A wonderful benefit of eating an 80/20 diet (80% clean, 20% small indulgences) is when we do catch the flu or a nasty little bugger, our down time is usually 50% of the standard sick time or less. Let’s look at some natural immune boosters that are affordable and easily accessible. My personal fav –sunshine. Did you know that one of the best ways to boost your immune system is by increasing your Vitamin D intake? Supplements are ok, but they absorb differently for everyone. However, good ol’ fashioned sunshine is where it’s at! In the winter, …
